Toksan's Guide to Watching Galaxy Express 999

This post is part of the "Leijiverse" collection.

Galaxy Express 999 is a science fiction series created by Leiji Matsumoto, and is part of the "Leijiverse," following a human race that has found a way to transfer their minds to mechanical bodies. There are a good number of series and entries in this series, so it can be daunting to get into. So, here's a simple guide to how you should watch Galaxy Express 999!

Once again, I am not an expert on this series, and I got a good chunk of the information for this guide from this forum post.

How to Watch Galaxy Express 999

Being a Leiji series, the chronology is somewhat flimsy, but there is still a watch order that can be followed.

The series proper goes as follows:

Galaxy Express 999 (anime) -> GE999: Eternal Fantasy

or...

Galaxy Express 999 (movie) -> Adieu GE999

On top of this, there are movies that act as compilations, but they don't add to the greater canon of GE999.

Within the Galaxy Express 999 story and lore, there are a some additional series that can be watched outside of the main series. The series that can be watched include:

Maetel Legend -> Space Symphony Maetel

Queen Millennia (TV) -> Queen Millennia (Movie)

The Queen Millennia story was originally its own thing, but eventualy was absorbed into GE999. Additionally, there is a series called The Galaxy Railways, which goes as follows:

The Galaxy Railways -> Galaxy Railways: Eternal Divergence -> Galaxy Railways: Letter from the Abandoned Planet

GR: Letter From the Abandoned Planet is a crossover between GE999 and GR. It takes place before GE999 ends, and between season 1 and 2 of GR.

There is also an offshoot called The Galaxy Railways: Faraway Angels.

In addition to these, there are also a one-off called Cosmo Warrior Zero that is only somewhat related to GE999.
