Toksan's Guide to Watching Getter Robo

Updated: Jan 12, 2021

Getter Robo is one of the greats of classic mecha anime, and is a member of the subgroup, "super robot" anime. It was created by Go Nagai and Ken Ishikawa, and produced by Dynamic Productions.

This watchguide will be a bit different, since I am by no means an expert on this series. If you want lots of tidbits and cool facts about the series, I sincerely recommend you check out the wiki made by dedicated and knowledgeable people, here. What I'll try to do instead is provide a single page that arranges the series in an easy-to-follow fashion, so readers can easily track what they need to do next.

Dynamic Productions has many crossovers between their popular series, like Getter Robo, Mazinger, and Devilman. However, these crossovers are not necessarily considered canon in their respective universes.

Thank you to @MS06SZakuII on Twitter for providing corrections for this watchguide!

Let's begin!

Where To Start

In terms of anime, Getter Robo does not have too many entries, and has a single central timeline, and some spinoffs/retellings. The order of the anime series, called "Getter Robo Saga," is as follows:

Getter Robo -> Getter Robo G -> Getter Robo Go

...with just the anime. The manga version (marked in blue) goes:

Getter Robo -> Getter Robo G -> Getter Robo Go -> Shin Getter Robo -> Getter Robo Arc

The manga series is not interchangeable with the anime series, and the two are separate timelines.

Edit: Getter Robo Arc's anime adaptation has been announced for 2021!

After that...

Other non-"Saga" animated series are:

Getter Robo Armageddon (or Change!! Getter Robo)

New Getter Robo, a remake of the original Getter Robo

Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo

Shin Getter Robo vs. Neo Getter Robo and Getter Robo Armageddon, while separate from the Saga timeline, assume some familiarity with the universe of Getter Robo, so they are not a good starting point for the anime.

That being said, Shin vs. Neo can be watched directly after the finishing the Getter Robo manga.

New Getter Robo is a "re-imagining" of the original series, and draws from the manga in its near entirety.

Thank you @AhabsArtwork for the clarification!

There is a good number of manga that the series is based on, and others that haven't even been adapted yet. You can check out the full list of entries in the Getter Robo series here.

Crossovers

Of course, there is crossover material for Getter Robo. This includes Super Robot Wars, which acts as a giant crossover across many different franchises. There is also Great Mazinger vs. Getter Robo, Grendizer, Getter Robo G, Great Mazinger: Battle! Giant Sea Beast, Great Mazinger Vs. Getter Robo G: The Great Space Encounter, and Devilman vs. Getter Robo.
