Macross is a mech franchise that is a part of the "real robot" subgroup. It was created by Studio Nue and Artland, sponsored by Big West Frontier, and started airing in 1982. Since then, there have been a number of series, movies, games, and a light novel series.
For anybody new to the series, it might be daunting trying to figure out the watch order. As I am not an expert on this series, I will be focusing on providing a simple watch order for the animated entries of this series. Information for this guide was pulled from Wikipedia, the Wikia, and Reddit.
Where to Start
Watching Macross is pretty straighforward, as most of the series goes in release order. That would be the following:
Super Dimension Fortress Macross -> Macross: Do You Remember Love? -> Macross Plus -> Macross 7 -> Macross Dynamite 7 -> Macross Frontier -> Macross Delta

SDF Macross:
Macross Zero is a prequel to Super Dimension Fortress Macross. You can watch it before or after the original, but make sure you watch it before reaching Frontier, as it is referenced in that series.
Macross: Do You Remember Love? is a theatrical adaptation of the original series, but some new stuff.
Macross 7:
Between approximately episodes 38 and 40 of Macross 7, there is a movie, Macross 7 the Movie: The Galaxy's Calling Me! There is also a series of OVAs called Macross 7: Encore.
Macross Frontier:
The light novel, Macross The Ride, is set one year before the events of Macross Frontier.
Macross Frontier Movie: The False Songstress and Macross Frontier Movie: The Wings of Goodbye are collectively a theatrical adaptation of Macross Frontier.
Macross Delta:
Macross Delta the Movie: Passionate Walküre is a theatrical adaptation of Macross Delta, and a sequel, Macross Delta the Movie: Absolute Live!!!!!! is expected in 2020.
One important distinction to make is that each of the movie adaptations of the series have altered storylines from the series they are based on, and also add new content to the series.
There is also Super Dimensional Fortress Macross II: Lovers Again, which is completely separate from the rest of the series.
